AB&I reaches out to their neighbor EnCompass Academy
April 24, 2017
AB&I located in Oakland, California is always looking for opportunities to pay it forward in the communities where our team members live and work. As part of that initiative, they have partnered with EnCompass Academy located on 81st Avenue about 1,100 feet from the AB&I facility. The Academy has about 324 students enrolled from T-K through 5th grade. The campus is beautiful with rolling lawns and pathways lined with native plants, beautiful play structures, garden beds, an outdoor amphitheater, a state-of-the-art multipurpose room, and the largest branch of the Oakland public library co-located on their campus. As Mrs. Nguyen, the Principal stated “This campus is truly an oasis for children to learn and develop.”
When they first reached out to the school, Principal Nguyen and the staff didn’t really know what to make of AB&I and were a little hesitant to pursue a relationship. They naturally wanted to know more about AB&I and AB&I was curious about the school located right in the middle of East Oakland that seemed more like a private school with a different philosophy than most local schools.
After talking they realized they were very similar in the way they viewed their respective businesses. EnCompass believes that education starts with self, is guided by families, is engaged in the community, and is rooted in ancestors. They strive to reach the whole child, and as a result, their students thrive through a culturally-responsive, empowering, and caring school culture with deep relationships, personal attention, data-driven and standards-based learning, and family/school partnerships. Just like AB&I, they are not interested in just complying with the academic standards, they want to go above and beyond to inspire and support their students not only during their time at EnCompass Academy but beyond. AB&I’s culture also empowers team members to go above and beyond what is required of them to set and reach sustainable career goals.
Once, Principal Nguyen and her staff found out more about AB&I and their business philosophy and the longevity of their team members, everything changed. Dave Robinson, Michael Lowe and Zeydi Gutierrez visited the school several times and attended two assemblies and they walked away extremely impressed with how the children are cared for holistically and how they work with each child to reach their full potential while imparting lessons about health and the environment which extends from the classroom to their families and eventually to their communities.
On April 5, AB&I hosted a visit by Principle Nguyen and eight members of her staff. They got a kick out of the personal protective equipment (PPE) they had to wear during the tour. They were extremely impressed with how long AB&I has been in business and the efforts they make to comply with standards while taking care of their team members which extends to the community.
AB&I hopes to build a strong relationship with their close neighbor, EnCompass Academy. Thanks to everyone that helped with the tour. It really made a difference!
